Burnout Recovery Infrastructure

Burnout is an institutional governance failure. The evidence has been clear on this for twenty-five years. The governance response is still a wellness app.

The Governance Problem

Why This Module Exists

Maslach, Schaufeli and Leiter (2001) established that burnout is fundamentally a mismatch between person and job across six organizational domains: workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values. Individual interventions — resilience training, mindfulness, Employee Assistance Programs — do not change any of these six conditions. They address symptoms while leaving structural causes intact. Kiratipaisarl et al.'s 2024 meta-analysis found that organizational interventions produced greater burnout reductions than individual interventions in resident physicians. The governance failure is that most institutions’ response to documented burnout is structurally incapable of producing the results they say they want.

Six Governance Dimensions

What the Assessment Measures

The prototype organizes reflection across six proposed governance dimensions. It does not produce a validated institutional score, audit, accreditation, or certification.

1 Workload Assessment & Governance
2 Autonomy & Control Standards
3 Reward & Recognition Infrastructure
4 Community & Social Support Standards
5 Fairness & Equity Standards
6 Values Alignment Assessment
PIONEERING Governance

What the Highest Tier Looks Like

PIONEERING — Fully Implemented Governance

Documented maximum workload standards by role with formal reporting and required administrative response; decision-making autonomy governance; transparent non-supervisor-dependent recognition system; formal peer support program; quarterly fairness review; annual values alignment survey with documented leadership response.

The full tier operationalization — PIONEERING through EARLY STAGE, with specific observable criteria for all six dimensions — is documented in the Framework Foundation.

Who Should Prioritize This Module

Built for These Institutions — and the People Inside Them

Hospitals and health systems · Legal organizations · Schools and universities · Social service agencies · Any institution with documented staff burnout — which is most institutions

And anyone burning out inside one. Burnout is a mismatch an institution can govern. If a wellness app is the only thing offered to you, this is the response that was missing.

Space Law Application

Applied to Space and Extreme Environments

Maslach’s six person-job mismatch domains — workload, control, reward, community, fairness, values — map with near-perfect fidelity onto the documented psychological risk factors in long-duration spaceflight and isolated confined environment research. Stuster (2010) identified interpersonal conflict, inadequate autonomy, and monotony as the three most consistent predictors of adverse behavioral health in analog environments. These are the same organizational governance failures M8 addresses on Earth. In space, they cannot be escaped; they can only be governed.
